Beginning in 1958 as a manufacturing company, Midway was purchased by Bally which produced slot machines. The breakout for the new company came when Midway distributed Taito’s Space Invaders in 1978, quickly followed by the U.S. distribution of Pac-Man in 1980. These two successes, combined with the success of Ms. Pac-Man, helped make Midway into the largest producer of arcade games in the U.S. throughout the late 1970′s to the late 1980′s.
As the market shifted from arcade machines to in-home consoles, Midway struggled to sustain itself among an increasingly crowded video gaming landscape resulting in the dissolution of Midway during 2009 after a buyout by Warner Brothers Interactive.
Pac-Man will remain to be one of the most iconic video games ever made. By 1990 the franchise generated more than $2.5 billion in quarters, with a number of Pac-branded spin offs including a top 10 single and animated television series.
